Welcome to The Weekly Five – Episode 29.
Continuing the good news from down in Tierra del Fuego, the Rio Grande is now entirely Catch & Release. What fantastic leadership from the Chile Government in support of their world-famous anadromous trout and salmon fishery!
Las Segadas Lodge reports that new legislation passed in July 2025 mandates recreational fishing on the Río Grande and Río Blanco (plus a few other nearby rivers and lakes) “may only be carried out under the … catch-and-release method for all captured specimens, and throughout the entire fishing season, using the catch-and-release method with single lures and barbless hooks.” [translated].
Montana trout streams are in crisis. A conservation group called Save Wild Trout has been raising the alarm over struggling cold‑water rivers in southwest Montana – the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, and Jefferson watersheds. Issues include high summer temperatures, nutrient enrichment, algae blooms, and low dissolved oxygen. Please read about what they’re doing and support them as best you can.
On that note, they recommend that you do your part by: (1) committing to using barbless single hook flies, (2) keep fish wet, (3) ease up on the grip 'n grins, (4) catch and release only, and (5) put the rod away when water temps reach 65-68°F (18-20°C). Simple stuff that collectively makes a difference.
Same in the UK, where rising river temperatures are supercharging pollution. The Angling Trust warns that climate change is worsening river health, with volunteer monitors recording record pollution levels during spring 2025’s unseasonal heat.
Rounding out The Weekly Five this week is a call to arms. The so‑called ‘Anglercore’ fashion trend – pocket‑heavy vests and fishing gear worn as style – continues to grow, especially in urban streetwear. Sports Illustrated pushed back, but to no avail. While visually striking and great for Patagonia and Barbour sale volumes, this disturbing trend is clearly diverging from functionality and not reflecting participation in fly fishing itself. I mean, can they even tie a Bimini Twist?
South2 West8 (Japan) is one of many fashion houses rocking Anglercore in New York during Summer 2025. Yes, you likely heard it here first.
