EXPLORATION ANGLING — TWF46
Xcalak Permit Paradise, Holbox for Migratory Tarpon and Tail Inn for some good times at Espiritu Santo Bay. It’s all in Issue 46 of The Weekly Five.
We’ve been down in southern Mexico, fishing for permit out of the brand-new Xcalak Paradise Lodge. Here’s some rough drone footage courtesy of Pablo Sarraco.
More to come on Xcalak Paradise Lodge in a separate article …
Feedback is noticeably quiet on the G Loomis release of their long-awaited freshwater Asquith series 2. Might be the US$1,570 price tag? They’ve added a curved fixed-hood reel seat that will also create debate. Summer stock is severely limited across the freshwater 4-7 weight models, but check your local flyshop for a demo model.

Despite being in Holbox at the peak of the Migratory Tarpon season, we only had two days on the water. That was enough to catch a couple of beauties, one coming in at over 120lb and snapping a shiny new Sage R8 Salt 12wt partway through the battle. Here’s fellow angler, Mike T from Boise with a small MT from day two … one of over a hundred spotted that day.
It was gutting to say a final farewell to master fly tier and Aussie confidante, Chris Beech, in late May. His dry humor and wise words frequented a few of the better fly fishing forums. His flies made it into the boxes of great anglers. In his memory, we left one of his Chicken Foot flies on the swap board at Xcalak Paradise Lodge for a future visitor to enjoy. Cya, Beechie.
Midway between Xcalak and Holbox on the Costa Maya, Tail Inn Lodge in Espiritu Santo Bay didn't disappoint. Catch a permit, wear the costume.
We wrote on the Tail Inn back in July 2024 when it opened. Two years on, it remains a fun lodge with excellent staff, an open bar and a homely vibe.
