Welcome to The Weekly Five (9th edition). It’s been a sunny winter week with crisp starts and starry nights across New Zealand, contrasting the scorching temperatures reported throughout North America. July can be a warm month that affects many rivers in the USA so I’ve looked into a couple of locations.
The Sierras are apparently fishing well now the runoff has abated. Get your weekly California River Report before you head off to the Truckee.
Not so for the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, which has temporarily closed all fishing due to low stream flows and high water temperatures; the third closure in the last four years.
Heading to Colorado? Stay at the Grand Lake Lodge and fish the Rocky Mountain National Park. Check in with Kirks Flyshop to avoid any low and warm rivers.
Analysis from Jamie Madden at Keepfishwet.org advises 61°F/16°C is the new 68°F/20°C for rainbow trout in rivers. Rules to live by.
Some Montana waters are operating under hoot owl provisions that prohibit fishing each day between 2 p.m. and midnight.
Let’s make this summer’s top gear investment a quality thermometer, such as the Fishpond Riverkeeper. Informed decisions lead to better choices.
